Sammlung Boros, Contemporary art museum in Mitte, Germany
Sammlung Boros occupies a five-story concrete bunker displaying international contemporary art across around 3000 square meters of exhibition space. The building houses permanent collection displays and rotating exhibitions spread throughout its different levels.
The building was constructed in 1942 as an air raid shelter and later served as a Soviet prison and fruit storage facility. After the Berlin Wall fell, Christian Boros acquired it and gradually transformed it into an art museum.
The collection bears its founder's name and shows how a private collector makes contemporary art accessible to the public. Visitors experience not just artworks but also see how modern collecting and living operate within a historic structure.
Access is by guided tour only and requires advance reservation through the official website. Tours run Thursday through Sunday and take visitors through the different exhibition levels.
The upper floors of the bunker serve as private residence for the founder and his family, setting this apart from typical museums. This mixing of art and private living creates an unusual experience for visitors.
