Schlüchtsee

Schlüchtsee, reservoir in Germany

Schlüchtsee is a reservoir in Grafenhausen surrounded by forest and green meadows in the Black Forest region. The water is accessed by well-maintained paths and features designated swimming areas, benches, and a small café with a terrace overlooking the water.

The lake was created in the late 1700s when monks from St. Blasien monastery built a dam to store ice for the nearby brewery. Over the centuries, the area evolved into a protected nature reserve hosting rare plants that date back to the Ice Age.

The name Schlüchtsee reflects its origins as a human-made water source created by monks centuries ago. Today, visitors and fishermen value it as a place to connect with nature while respecting the protected habitat that shelters rare plants and local wildlife.

The site is easily reached on foot from nearby towns with marked and groomed paths circling the water. The swimming area has changing facilities and toilets nearby, and it is best to bring comfortable shoes, a hat, and water for your visit.

The water is home to rare Ice Age plants such as the Mittlere Teichrose, which were deliberately moved here to survive. Beavers and bats have returned to the area after many years of absence and can be spotted in the evening light.
