Krabbenloch-Kaserne Ludwigsburg, Military barracks in Ludwigsburg, Germany
Krabbenloch-Kaserne was a military complex in eastern Ludwigsburg with several buildings along Danziger Street and Friedrichstrasse. After the war, the site was completely redeveloped into a residential neighborhood with schools, kindergarten, supermarket, and sports facility.
German military construction of the barracks began in 1938 and was used as a prisoner-of-war camp called Stalag V A during World War II. After 1949, the American Army occupied the site and maintained various military units there until 1993.
The name Krabbenloch comes from the landscape of the area. Today you find a modern residential neighborhood with shops and schools here, where military buildings once stood.
The site is now a standard residential neighborhood with good access and public facilities including schools and shopping centers. Most of the original military buildings are no longer visible, so it is mainly of interest to those curious about history.
The only preserved building from the original complex is the heating plant, which still functions as a heating center in the new residential area. It stands as a rare reminder of the former military installation amid the modern neighborhood.
