Emichsburg, Medieval garden structure in Ludwigsburg, Germany
Emichsburg is a structure of two connected towers of different heights positioned on a rocky rise above the Lower East Garden and Emichsee lake. The building contains narrow spiral stairs inside and offers wide views across the palace gardens from the top.
Duke Friedrich II commissioned architect Nikolaus Friedrich von Thouret to design and build this medieval-style structure between 1798 and 1802 on the site of an old quarry. The choice of location over a former extraction site was deliberate, creating a visual focal point for the gardens.
The name comes from Emicho, a knight documented in the 12th century who had ties to the region and its noble families. Today you can see how the towers watch over the gardens and give character to this special place.
To visit the towers, you need to climb over 150 steps via narrow spiral stairs, which requires good fitness. Wear sturdy shoes and take care on the narrow stairs, especially when moving around at the top.
The gardens include this structure as part of a fairy tale setting, where one of the towers plays a role in a well-known story. In the basement you will find an animated scene that brings this storybook connection to life.
