Piraten in Batavia, Water dark ride at Europa-Park, Germany
Piraten in Batavia is a water dark ride at Europa-Park that takes boats through scenes of colonial Batavia. Along the way, passengers encounter 100 animated figures, elaborate effects, and detailed scenery that creates an immersive world.
The original attraction opened in 1987 and drew many visitors before a fire destroyed it in May 2018. It reopened in 2020 with updated technology and redesigned scenes.
The attraction portrays the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia through scenes showing the lives of pirates, colonists, and local people working and living together. The setting displays traditional buildings and objects that make this historical period feel present.
The ride lasts about eight minutes and travels across water passages, with each boat holding 16 passengers comfortably. Visiting in early morning or late afternoon typically means shorter waits.
The ride uses 300 speakers and 700 spotlights built directly into the scenery to bring the environment to life. These technologies create soundscapes and lighting that blend naturally into the surroundings.
