Vodafone-Hochhaus, High-rise building in Carlstadt, Germany
The Vodafone-Hochhaus is a high-rise office building in Carlstadt, a central district of Düsseldorf, and one of the notable examples of post-war architecture in North Rhine-Westphalia. Its 22 floors are arranged in a U-shape around a reinforced concrete core that holds the elevators and staircases, supported by a steel skeleton frame.
The building came out of a 1954 architecture competition won by Egon Eiermann and Paul Schneider-Esleben. It was completed between 1956 and 1958 and originally served as the headquarters of the Mannesmann industrial group before eventually being taken over by Vodafone.
The blue and white facades still recall the original Mannesmann corporate identity, even after the building changed hands. These colors stand out clearly in Carlstadt and give the tower a recognizable presence in the neighborhood.
The tower is clearly visible from street level and works well as a reference point when moving around Carlstadt. Walking around the block gives different views of the facades and lets you appreciate the building's shape from several angles.
Every winter, the tower is lit up in a pattern that forms the outline of a large Christmas tree on its facade. This seasonal display draws attention from across the city and has become something locals look out for each December.
