Castle Berg, Medieval hillfort in Berg district, Stuttgart, Germany.
Castle Berg was a hillfort built by a local noble family in the 12th century and located in the Berg district. The remains consist of the foundations of a residential tower and other structures that now lie within the grounds of a mineral spa complex.
The fortress was built by the von Berg family in the 12th century to display their power in the region. During regional conflicts, it was destroyed in 1287 and never rebuilt afterward.
The name Berg reflects the family that once ruled from here and shaped local identity. Visitors today can observe how nobility lived by walking through the excavated foundations of a residential tower.
The remains are located at an elevated location approximately 210 meters above sea level and can be viewed from the grounds of the mineral spa complex. Visitors should know that the foundations are partially embedded in the ground and were only uncovered during excavations beginning in 1856.
The walls were roughly three meters thick, revealing impressive medieval construction techniques. This thickness allowed the fortress to withstand regional conflicts over an extended period before its eventual destruction.
