Billund

Billund is a small town in central Jutland in Denmark, sitting on flat, sandy ground east of Grindsted. The layout follows several main roads that connect housing areas with shops and an airport.

The site first appears in records in 1454 as Byllundt with eight farms, and the settlement remained small and agricultural for centuries. Growth started in 1916 when a woodworking shop opened here, later shifting to making toys.

The name Billund comes from Old Norse words for hill and grove, and today the town still has open spaces that give it a quiet, airy feel. The sculptures placed throughout public areas add a creative touch that visitors notice as they move between shops and residential streets.

The airport sits right next to the town center and offers connections to destinations across Europe, with terminals within walking distance. The flat ground and short distances make it easy to find your way, and visitor centers provide information about the area.

The population grew from 249 in 1930 to over 7000 today, an unusually rapid expansion for a Danish rural settlement of this size. This shift shows in the architecture too, where modern buildings stand beside older structures and reveal different phases of growth.
