Thibilis, Archaeological site in Selaoua Anouna, Algeria.
Thibilis is an ancient Roman settlement spread across a large area at the base of Anouna mountain. The remains show paved streets, city gates, columns, palaces, and a large central plaza with extensive building foundations.
The settlement began as a Phoenician center and later became an important Roman city with a well-organized administration. This development took place between the 1st century before Christ and the 7th century after Christ.
The inscriptions found here date to Phoenician and Roman times and show what mattered to the people who lived here. They reveal details about religious beliefs and how society was structured.
The site lies about 27 kilometers from Guelma on the road toward Constantine and is relatively easy to reach. When visiting, wear sturdy shoes and allow time to explore the different areas of the excavation.
The site has five distinct entrance gates, including the Church Gate and the Victory Gate, linked by a network of ancient streets. These multiple access points show that the city was reachable from different directions and served multiple purposes.
