Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Art museum and sculpture garden in Humlebæk, Denmark.
The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is an art museum with a sculpture garden in Humlebæk, Denmark, showing modern and contemporary pieces. The grounds sit on a slope facing the Øresund strait and consist of several low pavilions connected by glass passageways.
The museum opened in 1958 on the estate of a factory owner who had named his villa after his three wives. Architects Vilhelm Wohlert and Jørgen Bo designed the first three buildings with glass links, which were expanded over the following decades until 1991.
Visitors walk through glass corridors that connect galleries with a park where sculptures stand among trees and grass near the water. The collection brings together pieces from different periods and movements, creating contrasts between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Access is easiest by train to Humlebæk station, from where the grounds are a short walk away. The museum opens Tuesday through Friday until 22:00, on weekends until 18:00, and the park invites visitors to linger with views over the water.
The collection holds over 4000 works from international artists including Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Yves Klein, and Louise Bourgeois. Many visitors only realize while walking through how large the permanent collection actually is.
