Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo, Botanical garden in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.
Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo is a botanical garden in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that spreads across a large terrain and houses over 500 plant species. The collection includes species from the Canary Islands and various subtropical regions.
The garden was founded in 1952, and Swedish botanist Eric Sventenius developed the collection afterward. His life's work was creating this botanical sanctuary in the Atlantic region.
The garden preserves different Canarian ecosystems in its sections, from laurel forests to coastal vegetation, and displays the natural diversity of the islands. Visitors can see here the typical plants that shape the landscape of the Canary Islands.
The garden is easy to explore on foot, as the paths are well-maintained and suitable for different fitness levels. There are shaded areas under trees where you can rest and enjoy the views.
The garden protects rare plant species that are threatened with extinction, including special dragon trees and native palm species. Some of these plants are found only in this archipelago and nowhere else in the world.
