Sanctuary of Torreciudad, Marian shrine in Secastilla, Spain
Torreciudad rises at 506 meters elevation near the Cinca River and shows neo-Mudéjar architecture built with handmade bricks and alabaster elements. The main nave opens to a high choir, while four chapel crypts form the lower section of the complex.
Construction started in January 1970 under architect Heliodoro Dols following a neo-Mudéjar design with regional materials. The inauguration took place on July 7, 1975 after five years of building work.
The site honors a Romanesque Madonna statue from the eleventh century that draws pilgrims from across Aragon. This representation belongs to the region's venerated dark Madonna figures that have been objects of popular devotion for centuries.
Visitors can walk through the main complex and explore the four chapel crypts that each display different aspects of Marian devotion. Multimedia stations inside explain the site's origins and meaning for pilgrims.
The Vatican appointed Archbishop Alejandro Arellano Cedillo as pontifical commissioner in 2024 and thereby changed the leadership of the shrine. This decision marks a new chapter in the administrative history of the site.
