Hougham Battery, Coastal artillery battery in Kent, England
Hougham Battery is a coastal artillery installation in Kent, England, containing three gun emplacements and a network of underground tunnels positioned within the cliffs between Dover and Folkestone. The structures lie partly beneath the A20 road built in the 1970s, which covered most remains with earth.
Built in 1941, the battery served to protect the Kent coastline with three 8-inch naval guns operated by the 520th Coastal Regiment of the Royal Artillery. This defensive system formed part of Britain's coastal fortification against potential invasion during the war.
The site displays World War II military architecture with observation posts and defensive structures still visible today. These elements help visitors understand how personnel operated and monitored the coastline during wartime.
Most structures lie buried underground, so visitors will find only limited surface remains to view. The generally flat terrain and accessible layout make the site straightforward to explore.
The underground plotting room preserves original electrical equipment and displays wartime construction techniques. These detailed installations offer insight into the technical infrastructure that operated during the war.
