St Mary Matfelon

St Mary Matfelon was a medieval parish church with red brick walls and a tower that rose prominently above the neighborhood. The building featured various window styles, including Venetian, oval, and square designs throughout its structure.

The church was founded in 1329 and underwent several reconstructions over the centuries before being destroyed during World War II. The ruins were demolished in 1952, after which the site was transformed.

The grounds now host Altab Ali Park, which centers on the Shaheed Minar Monument honoring those who died in the Bengali Language Movement. This space serves as a gathering place that reflects the neighborhood's diverse population and shared memories.

The site is now a public park, and the stone outline of the original church is visible on the ground marking its former footprint. This helps visitors understand the building's original size and layout.

The neighborhood's name Whitechapel comes from the white coating that covered the church building, a connection that shaped the area's identity for generations. This link between the building and the district's name illustrates how one structure influenced an entire neighborhood's development.
