Chandos Mausoleum, Baroque mausoleum in Little Stanmore, United Kingdom
The Chandos Mausoleum is a Baroque burial structure on the north side of St Lawrence Whitchurch church in the London Borough of Harrow. It combines early 18th-century English Baroque architecture with Italian classical influences and impressive craftsmanship throughout.
The mausoleum was designed and built by James Gibbs in 1735 following the death of James Brydges' second wife. The architect incorporated classical elements to create a dignified burial monument for the deceased duchess.
The interior displays wall paintings with optical illusions and a ceiling modeled after Rome's Pantheon dome with Rococo details. These elaborate decorations reflect the wealth and refined taste of the building's original owner.
This building is normally open to visitors on Sundays through the Churches Conservation Trust and sits in a residential area with good transport links. The nearest Underground station at Canons Park can be reached on foot in a few minutes.
The west wall features an artwork by sculptor Grinling Gibbons showing the Duke in Roman dress with kneeling female figures beside him. This notable relief is a rare example of craftsmanship from that era.
