Seven Barrows, Bronze Age burial ground in Upper Lambourn, England

Seven Barrows is an ancient burial site in Upper Lambourn with more than thirty mounds arranged in two parallel rows across four hectares. The earthworks range from long-chambered structures to bell-shaped tumuli from later Bronze Age periods.

The burial ground was used over several millennia, beginning with Neolithic structures around 6000 years ago through the Bronze Age circa 2200 BCE. Excavations revealed human remains including one mound containing more than a hundred skeletons from Bronze Age periods.

The mounds display different forms such as long barrows and bell-shaped structures that correspond to distinct burial rituals from separate time periods. Walking through reveals how funeral practices evolved and diversified across multiple centuries of use.

The site is reachable by way of established footpaths with a gravel parking area near the B4001 road. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground has uneven terrain and can become slippery in wet conditions.

The protected grassland shelters over 150 plant species and uncommon butterflies such as marsh fritillaries and various blue species. The chalk grassland ecosystem is equally valuable to visitors as the archaeological history itself.
