Swingate Mill, Guston

Swingate Mill, Guston, Tower mill and Grade II listed building in Guston, England.

Swingate Mill is a four-story brick tower mill with a distinctive Kentish-style cap and cast iron machinery inside. The structure used three pairs of millstones to process grain.

The building was constructed in 1849 and operated successfully until 1943 when sails were damaged by enemy fire during World War II. This event marked the end of its milling operations.

The mill reflects working methods that shaped generations of millers in this area. Families like the Mummeries operated the building over decades and influenced community life in meaningful ways.

The building is now a private residence and cannot be visited inside. Visitors can view the exterior from nearby streets and appreciate the brick tower structure from the outside.

Several components of this mill came from an unfinished windmill project in Dover. Parts like the cap, sails, windshaft, and brake wheel were reused here and continue to define its appearance today.
