Plunton Castle, Medieval tower house in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.

Plunton Castle is a three-story tower house with an L-shaped floor plan built around 1575 in Dumfries and Galloway. The structure features vaulted ceilings, gun loopholes for defense, and thick walls made of local greywacke stone accented with sandstone.

The castle was built around 1575 for the Lennox family and marked the transition between purely military structures and more habitable residences. Control of the property shifted to the Murrays of Broughton through marriage in the late 17th century.

The structure shows how Scottish noble families designed their homes to serve both as safe strongholds and livable residences for their households. You can see this balance reflected in how the rooms were arranged and equipped.

The ruins stand between Kirkandrews and Gatehouse of Fleet in an area with streams and marshy ground that once served as natural barriers. The terrain is damp and uneven, so appropriate footwear is essential and you should plan for a leisurely exploration.

The ground floor great hall retains original features including a fireplace and window openings that still show traces of their original iron grilles. These details reveal how residents sought to keep the space secure from attackers while still making it livable.
