Ardwall House, Category A listed country house in Anwoth, Scotland
Ardwall House is a category A listed building in Anwoth, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, situated close to Gatehouse of Fleet. The country house presents a central block with five bays, harled walls, and red sandstone detailing, flanked by two pavilion wings that form an H-plan layout.
The McCulloch family commissioned the main building in 1762, originally designed as a central block. The two pavilion wings were added in 1895, extending the property into its present form.
The interior contains eighteenth-century elements including paneled doors, decorated cornices, arched stairways, and ornate fireplaces throughout the residence.
The north facade entrance is reached by a curved stone stairway leading to a Roman Doric doorway with detailed carvings. Visitors should note that the property is privately owned and may not be regularly accessible to the public.
A Pictish stone slab from the early medieval period stands in the garden, discovered on Ardwall Isle and carved with a Celtic cross. This slab offers insight into the early Christian presence in this part of southwest Scotland.
