Rusko Castle, Medieval castle in Anwoth, Scotland.
Rusko Castle is a medieval stone tower in Anwoth with three stories and walls measuring between 6 to 8 feet thick. Inside, the structure contains multiple storage rooms and living quarters arranged within these substantial fortifications.
The castle was built around 1500 for Mariota Carson and Robert Gordon during the early Scottish tower house period. It later became the site of family disputes when James Gordon imprisoned his mother over property ownership disagreements.
The tower house displays typical Scottish defensive features such as gun loops and small windows designed for security and light control. These architectural choices reflect how residents balanced practical needs with the realities of living in a fortified stone structure.
The castle sits roughly 5 miles north of Gatehouse of Fleet and is accessible by foot or vehicle from nearby roads. Access to the interior depends on current conditions, so visitors should check locally before making the trip.
Excavations in 1973 uncovered four garderobe chutes filled with domestic items from the 19th century, revealing extended occupation of the site. These discoveries show the castle remained in regular use much longer than its medieval origins might suggest.
