Old Church of St George, Hill Street Dublin, Protestant church tower in Hill Street, Dublin, Ireland
The Old Church of St George on Hill Street is now represented only by its square bell tower, built in 1714, which rises three stories with rubble stone walls and narrow round-headed windows at each level. Two entrances serve the tower: a blocked round-headed door on the west side and an iron-gated door on the east side.
The tower was built between 1710 and 1715 as a Protestant chapel serving the parish alongside Saint Mary's Church. After 1894, most of the original building was demolished, leaving only this tower standing as a remnant of the earlier structure.
The former graveyard beside the church was converted into a playground, with old gravestones now set into the boundary walls as permanent reminders. This transformation shows how the site adapted to serve the neighborhood in new ways while keeping its history visible.
This site sits on a busy street in Dublin and is easily viewable from the road without needing special access. The tower's exterior and the adjacent playground can be visited at any time, though entry to the interior is restricted.
The bell from this tower was moved to the new Saint George's Church on Temple Street North after the 1894 demolition and still rings there today. This object connects the two different buildings of the same congregation across more than a century.
