Vieste Lighthouse, Coastal lighthouse on Santa Eufemia islet in Vieste, Italy
The Vieste lighthouse is a white stone structure with an octagonal shape and approximately 27 meters in height, standing on a small islet off the coast. The structure consists of a tower with a balcony, a lantern at the top, and a two-story building at the base.
Construction of the lighthouse began in 1867 following architect Francesco Saverio Gatta's design. The structure was later fully automated and now operates without a permanent crew.
The lighthouse takes its name from Saint Eufemia, a figure venerated in the local maritime tradition of the region. Visitors can sense the spiritual connection to the sea that has shaped this place through the centuries.
The site can be viewed from the outside, though interior access is limited. It is advisable to visit in good weather, as accessibility can be affected by harsh conditions on the exposed islet.
In a cave near the lighthouse, hundreds of inscriptions left by ancient sailors to the goddess Venus have been found. These remains show how this site has been regarded as sacred by seafarers since antiquity.
