Torre di Sfinale

Torre di Sfinale is a four-sided coastal tower in Peschici built across three levels that rises above Scialmarino beach. The structure shows signs of age, with missing portions of its original crown and deterioration in several areas.

The tower was built between 1568 and 1569 under orders from Alfonso Salazar, a Kingdom of Naples official. Architect Giovanni della Monica designed this structure as part of the coastal defense programs of southern Italy.

This tower formed part of a network of fortifications that guarded the Apulian coastline from sea-based threats. Visitors can observe how such structures were positioned to alert communities to approaching danger.

The tower is visible from outside, but visitors should be aware of uneven ground and potential structural damage. It is best to visit during daylight hours when lighting allows for good views and the surrounding area is clearly visible.

The tower originally featured a system of wooden stairs that guards could remove during attacks to prevent enemy access. Later modifications replaced this removable system with permanently built stone ramps, reflecting changing defensive tactics.
