Villa Medici at Careggi
Villa Medici at Careggi, Renaissance villa in Careggi district, Florence, Italy
Villa Medici at Careggi is a four-story Renaissance building with an interior courtyard surrounded by a loggia and crenellated details. The curved eastern facade is decorated with stone corbels that reflect the architectural style of the period.
Giovanni de Medici purchased the property in 1417 and initiated its transformation into a major residential center for the family. Over subsequent centuries, different generations added and adapted the building to meet their needs.
The villa served as a gathering place for scholars and thinkers under Cosimo the Elder, who came to read and discuss ancient texts together. This tradition of intellectual exchange shaped the cultural life of Florence during the Renaissance.
The building is located at Viale Gaetano Pieraccini 17 in Florence and is currently undergoing restoration work managed by the Tuscany regional administration. Visitors should check in advance about accessibility, as ongoing construction may affect entry conditions.
The basement houses a 17th-century nymphaeum created by Cardinal Carlo de Medici within former wine storage spaces. This hidden grotto blends architecture and water in an unexpected way, revealing the refined taste of the family.
