Catacombs of Rome, Archaeological site on Via Appia Antica, Rome, Italy

The catacombs form an extensive network of underground tunnels spanning 150 kilometers, containing thousands of burial niches carved into volcanic rock walls.

Between the 2nd and 5th centuries, these underground passages served as burial grounds for Roman citizens, including pagans, Jews, and early Christians.

The walls and ceilings of numerous burial chambers contain preserved frescoes and sculptures depicting early Christian symbols and biblical scenes.

Five catacombs remain open to visitors today, with guided tours available at San Sebastiano, San Callisto, Priscilla, Domitilla, and Sant'Agnese locations.

The rectangular niches within the catacombs were sealed with marble or clay tombstones, inscribed with names and religious symbols of the deceased.
