Villa Imperiale, Ancient Roman villa ruins in Pompeii, Italy
Villa Imperiale is an ancient Roman residence in Pompeii built on multiple terraces along the city walls. The structure includes a large columned hall and several rooms that reveal how people lived in that era.
The residence was built during the early imperial period as a wealthy family home. An earthquake in the first century damaged it severely, and it remained unrepaired until the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried the entire city.
The walls show third style frescoes with Greek-inspired mythological scenes painted directly onto the plaster. These decorated surfaces tell stories of ancient gods and heroes that visitors can still observe today.
The site allows visitors to explore multiple rooms, some containing original household items and furnishings that show daily life. Wear sturdy shoes and allow time to navigate the different levels of the property.
An alcove with windows overlooking the Gulf of Naples shows how architects adapted the building to fit the hillside terrain. This room was likely a favored spot for enjoying the view toward the sea.
