Castellazzo di Camastra, Medieval castle in Camastra, Italy.
Castellazzo di Camastra is a medieval castle with a pentagonal stone tower standing on a rocky plateau in Sicily. The walls still rise several meters high and show the original structure of this fortification.
The castle first appeared in written records in 1366 as 'turris Camastra'. In 1374 the nobleman Manfredi Chiaramonte took over the site and shaped its future.
The structure reflects medieval military building practices found across southern Italy, blending Norman and Arab influences in its stonework. Visitors can observe these construction methods directly in the walls.
The site can be reached by a hiking path from the center of Camastra, with the final stretch being somewhat uneven and rocky. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and bring water, especially during warmer months.
The ruins sit on Monte Akragante, where the ancient city of Camico is said to have stood according to old accounts. This layering of different time periods makes the climb particularly rewarding for those interested in tracing the layers of history.
