Monte Grondilice, Mountain summit in Massa, Italy
Monte Grondilice is a mountain summit in the Apuan Alps reaching 1809 meters, featuring a steep southwestern face. This cliff face rises approximately 400 meters directly from the surrounding landscape.
Giovanni Sandri made the first documented ascent in September 1881 while crossing the Apuan range over several days. This early mountaineering expedition helped establish routes through the region.
This summit has long served as a natural landmark between the provinces of Lucca and Massa-Carrara, helping locals navigate and define their territories across the Tuscan landscape.
The summit can be reached through several marked trails starting from Vinca or Val Serenaia, with the southeast ridge offering the most straightforward approach. Hikers should prepare for changing weather conditions at higher elevations.
Near this mountain lies the Olivifer Abyss, an underground cavern system discovered in 1988 that descends 1215 meters below the surface. It ranks among Italy's most significant cave formations.
