National Museum of Matera

The National Museum of Matera exhibits numerous archaeological artifacts and ethnographic collections spanning from prehistoric times through various ancient civilizations of the region.

The museum opened in 1911 under the direction of Domenico Ridola, who dedicated his efforts to collecting and preserving archaeological findings from the local area.

The museum contains extensive collections documenting daily life, traditions, and customs of local communities throughout different historical periods in the Basilicata region.

Located in central Matera, the museum welcomes visitors Monday afternoons from 2 PM to 8 PM and Tuesday through Sunday from 9 AM to 8 PM.

The museum recorded substantial visitor fluctuations, from 50,342 people in 2019 to 5,914 in 2020, reflecting the impact of external circumstances on cultural institutions.
