Palazzo Malvinni-Malvezzi, Ducal palace in Piazza Duomo, Matera, Italy
Palazzo Malvinni-Malvezzi is a palace on Piazza Duomo featuring a Baroque facade with three decorated windows, balconies, and a central entrance portal. The building spans three floors and houses historic interior rooms with decorative furnishings.
The palace served as the residence of the Malvinni family starting in the 15th century, and the family received the ducal title of Santa Candida in 1734. They occupied the building until the 1960s.
The noble floor contains fourteen mythological canvas paintings above the doors, similar to those found in Palazzo Bernardini.
The building is managed by the Provincial Administration of Matera and opens for art exhibitions featuring paintings from the interior spaces. Visitors can explore the historic rooms during these exhibition periods.
The building was the scene of a dramatic event in 1860 when Count Francesco Gattini jumped into the palace's hayloft to escape a public uprising. The fall resulted in leg fractures, forcing him to escape the angry crowd.
