Chiesa del Purgatorio, Baroque church in central Matera, Italy
Chiesa del Purgatorio is a Baroque church in central Matera featuring a symmetrical facade divided into two sections with carved angels, baskets of fruit, and penitent figures surrounded by flames. Inside stands a Leonardo Carelli pipe organ from 1755 with nine registers and 45 main pipes.
Construction took place from 1725 to 1747, funded by the Confraternity of Purgatory under the design of architect Giuseppe Fatone from Andria. The building emerged during a period when the city was transforming its center with ornate religious structures.
The wooden entrance door displays 36 carved panels showing skulls of nobles and ordinary people, reflecting Catholic beliefs about death and redemption. This visual message was a direct way to teach visitors about religious ideas.
Located near the Sassi district, this building is freely accessible to visitors who wish to examine its architectural elements and decorative details. Time should be set aside to appreciate the intricate carvings on the facade and inside.
The pipe organ was crafted by Leonardo Carelli and features decorated cusps with painted stars, distinguishing it from typical church organs of its time. This instrument reflects the level of craftsmanship available in the region during the 18th century.
