Palazzo Bernardini, Historic palace in Sasso Caveoso, Matera, Italy
Palazzo Bernardini is a palace in the Sasso Caveoso neighborhood of Matera, featuring traditional stonework on its facade and rooms decorated with frescoed walls, twelve canvas paintings, and original Murano glass chandeliers. The spaces extend across multiple levels with different views toward the surrounding historic city.
The building was constructed in 1448 and passed through multiple hands, first from the Ulmo family to the Ferraù family, before Aldo Bernardini acquired it in 1974. This transition into the 20th century marked the start of its current use.
The rooms display furnishings from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with marble consoles, yellow damask upholstery, and decorative pieces that reflect how wealthy families lived during that period. Walking through these spaces gives a sense of domestic life from centuries past.
The property operates as a guest accommodation with rooms and features a garden offering direct views of the Madonna de Idris rock church and the city skyline. The location allows visitors to observe the historic landscape and the falcons that nest in the surrounding area.
The paintings and furnishings were gathered from different sources and represent a personal collection that grew over generations. The mix of different styles and periods makes the interior feel like a private art gallery with a living history.
