Riserva regionale Montagne della Duchessa, Regional nature reserve in Borgorose, Italy
The reserve spans 3,540 hectares of mountainous territory, with Monte Morrone reaching 2,141 meters and Murolungo reaching 2,184 meters above sea level.
Established in 1990, this protected area connects with Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park at its eastern and southern borders within the Lazio region.
The reserve contains the medieval hamlet of Corvaro, featuring a 10th-century castle with elliptical walls and four circular defensive towers.
A network of 57 kilometers of hiking trails allows visitors to explore the protected area, starting from Cartore at 944 meters up to Costone at 2,239 meters.
Lake Duchessa sits at 1,788 meters in a glacial basin, representing one of the highest lakes in the Apennines with surrounding meadows and limestone formations.
