Palmaiola Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse in Rio Marina, Italy
Palmaiola Lighthouse is a navigation light standing about 14 meters tall on Palmaiola Island between the Piombino Channel and Elba. The structure is powered by solar panels and emits a white flash every five seconds that can be seen by vessels within about 10 nautical miles.
A watchtower built by the Pisans stood on this strategic location starting in 909. The current lighthouse building was constructed in 1844 to replace the earlier structure.
The lighthouse serves as a familiar landmark for local fishermen and sailors who rely on it for navigation through busy waters. This practical role keeps the structure connected to the maritime way of life that has shaped the region.
The island can only be reached by boat as it is uninhabited and dedicated entirely to the lighthouse and its maintenance. Visitors can view the structure and its light from boats passing through the area, but landing is not publicly accessible.
The site has a helipad built specifically for military maintenance flights. This allows maintenance personnel to reach the remote island quickly and safely without relying on boat access.
