Tower of the Winds, Fascist architecture tower in Bergamo, Italy

The Tower of the Winds is a hexagonal structure in Bergamo with exterior walls of klinker brick and square openings on each side. Rising approximately 35 meters, the building has a hollow interior and features the artistic relief panels that give the facade its distinctive character.

The structure was built between 1939 and 1940 following designs by architect Alziro Bergonzo and was constructed rapidly to coincide with Benito Mussolini's inauguration of Casa Littoria. The original design included white stone slabs with inscriptions by Senate President Giacomo Suardo that highlighted the significance of the site.

The structure displays six high-relief panels in colored cement by sculptor Leone Lodi, depicting themes that reflect Bergamo and its connections to different cities. These artistic elements shape the exterior and tell stories of local identity through the visual language of the period.

The structure is located near the A4 highway exit and requires official authorization to enter. The ground level is currently used as a storage facility, which restricts access to the building.

The interior of the tower is completely hollow above ground level, which creates a surprising contrast with its solid exterior appearance. This empty interior reveals an unexpected construction approach that differs from what visitors might anticipate from looking at the facade.
