The archaeological site contains three preserved Roman settlements with public buildings, residential districts, villas, theaters, thermal baths, and marketplaces.
In 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying Pompeii under volcanic ash and Herculaneum under pyroclastic flows, preserving both cities in their original state.
The excavated buildings reveal daily Roman life through preserved frescoes, mosaics, furniture, objects, and inscriptions found throughout the residential and commercial areas.
Visitors can access 44 hectares of excavated ruins in Pompeii, while Herculaneum offers preserved multi-story buildings and Torre Annunziata features two Roman villas.
The Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum contained a library of 1,800 ancient scrolls, which underwent mineralization instead of carbonization during the volcanic event.
