Sumida Aquarium, Public aquarium in Tokyo Solamachi, Japan
Sumida Aquarium is a public aquarium in the Tokyo Solamachi shopping complex at the base of Tokyo Skytree in Oshiage district. The facility includes several exhibition zones with a 350-ton open pool where penguins and sea lions swim.
The facility opened in May 2012 as part of the Tokyo Solamachi complex built alongside Tokyo Skytree tower. The building was designed to let visitors experience sea life several floors above ground level.
The Edo-rium section on the ground floor presents goldfish in glass vessels that recreate traditional keeping methods from the Edo period. This exhibition recalls how Tokyo families kept these fish at home for several centuries.
You reach the tanks using dedicated elevators at West Yard fourth floor, and the facility opens at 10:00 on weekdays. On weekends the operation starts one hour earlier and closes later in the evening.
The Big Schale tank holds around 500 moon jellyfish that drift in controlled water conditions and form changing patterns through their movement. The currents in the tank are managed so the animals float in the center and their transparent bodies shimmer in the light.
