Ogata Fuji

Ogata Fuji is an artificial hill located in the Ogata area of Akita prefecture, constructed on reclaimed land at sea level. Stairs run along its sides to provide access to the summit.

The artificial hill was created on June 3, 1995, as part of a land development project in the former Hachirōgata Lagoon area. Its creation marked the transformation of what was once a wetland landscape.

The name references Mount Fuji and follows Japanese tradition of naming local landmarks after the nation's most famous mountain. This naming pattern shows how communities express their connection to national symbols.

The hill is accessible year-round with stairs making the climb straightforward for most visitors. The structure is relatively compact, so the walk to the summit takes only a few minutes.

At zero meters elevation, this is Japan's lowest designated mountain formation and an unusual geographic curiosity. Despite its extreme lowland position, it is officially recognized and counted as a mountain.
