Rokkō Bridge, Double-decker cable-stayed bridge in Higashinada-ku, Japan
Rokkō Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with two decks spanning across Osaka Bay. The upper level carries northbound traffic and the Rokko Liner transit system, while the lower level handles southbound vehicles and provides a pedestrian walkway.
The bridge opened in 1974 and connects the artificial island of Rokko Island with Kobe. It was designed as an engineering milestone for its time and represented an important step in Japanese infrastructure development.
During the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake, the bridge maintained continuous operation, providing critical passage for residents of Rokko Island to mainland Kobe.
The bridge is accessible daily for vehicles, trains, and pedestrians with good views of the bay. Visiting early in the morning or evening provides a less crowded experience compared to peak hours.
The bridge gained recognition as the world's first double-deck continuous truss cable-stayed structure when it was built. Its main span extends approximately 220 meters, making it a notable example of engineering design from that period.
