Izumi Koganezuka Kofun, Ancient burial mound in Izumi, Japan
Izumi Koganezuka Kofun is a large burial mound shaped like a keyhole, with a circular rear section and a rectangular front, typical of its era. Inside, three separate underground chambers once held wooden coffins and various grave goods from the 4th century.
Built in the late 4th century, this tomb reflects the burial practices of its time. Bronze mirrors and other items found inside show connections to distant regions during that period.
The mound's name comes from precious items discovered within its chambers. What visitors see today marks where archaeologists found evidence of someone of high rank.
The site sits at the edge of a mountain and can be reached on foot from a nearby train station. Wear comfortable shoes as the walk involves some uneven terrain and natural surroundings.
Excavations revealed a collection of small clay figurines representing everyday objects and structures from the time. These pieces offer a rare glimpse into what people valued enough to place in the grave.
