大阪府立臨海體育中心, Public sports complex in Takaishi, Japan
The Osaka Prefecture Coastal Sports Center (大阪府立臨海體育中心) is a public sports facility in Takaishi, a coastal city south of Osaka, featuring two large gymnasiums and an ice rink. The building serves both team and individual sports, with spaces for training and open public sessions.
The center was built in the early 1970s to offer leisure facilities to workers in the Sakai-Senpoku coastal industrial zone. In 2013, the facility faced closure before a combination of private donations and local support funded a renovation.
The facility is well known among figure skating fans because Japanese champion Daisuke Takahashi personally donated money to keep the ice rink open. Many young skaters come here to train on the same ice surface where their role model once practiced.
The facility is in Takaishi and can be reached by bus since the Nankai Hagoromo Line is currently suspended, which may add some time to the journey. It is a good idea to check current bus connections before setting off, especially if you plan to use the ice rink.
The center's ice rink sits just a short distance from Osaka Bay, which is unusual for a coastal industrial town. This proximity to the sea makes the building a rare example of a full ice sports facility in a port area.
