Oguri House, Merchant residence in Handa, Japan
The two-story wooden structure features a hip-and-gable roof with a shop area at the front and residential quarters at the back connected by a dirt floor.
Built in 1870, the Oguri House belonged to a merchant family that started with sake brewing and later expanded into fertilizer trade and maritime shipping.
The residence displays traditional Japanese architectural elements including tatami mat rooms, fusuma sliding doors, and thick supporting beams with vertical stripes.
Located at 1-18 Nakamuracho, the house stands a five-minute walk east of Handa Station on the JR Taketoyo Line.
The garden contains a 150-year-old white rambling rose tree, recognized as the oldest and largest of its kind in Japan.
