Sant'Angelo tower, Norman watchtower in Lido Sant'Angelo, Corigliano-Rossano, Italy
Sant'Angelo tower is a star-shaped fortification on the coast of Corigliano-Rossano with four diamond-pointed bastions and thick defensive walls. The structure rises just a short distance from the Ionian Sea and displays the military architecture typical of the 1500s.
The tower was built in 1543 using materials from the ancient Thurium arsenal that once occupied the same site. It became part of a coastal defense system against sea raiders who threatened the Kingdom of Naples.
The tower hosts summer art shows and theater events that draw local artists and visitors together. Walking through its spaces, you sense how the building has become a gathering place for the community.
The tower sits near the beach and is accessible on foot from central Rossano, with parking available in the immediate area. Guided visits are organized by local groups, especially during summer months when cultural events take place.
Inside the tower runs a well that extends through two levels, originally serving both as a water source and a way to communicate between floors. This practical feature shows how thoughtfully space was designed in early military buildings.
