Sugimoto Art Museum, Art museum in Mihama, Japan.
The Sugimoto Art Museum was an art institution in Mihama that displayed over 5000 works across its main building and a separate annex over the years. The collection centered on Japanese paintings and artistic creations by artist Kenkichi Sugimoto.
The institution was founded in 1987 through a partnership with the Meitetsu Group and became a regional cultural venue. It operated for 34 years before closing in 2021.
The museum operated a traditional Japanese tea room called Sugi-an where visitors could participate in tea ceremonies while experiencing the exhibited works. This practice blended craft traditions directly with the act of viewing contemporary art.
The venue was situated near Mihama Ryokuen Station on the Meitetsu Chita New Line, allowing visitors easy rail access. Comfortable clothing was advisable, particularly for those planning to participate in the tea ceremonies held within.
The collection included designs by Kenkichi Sugimoto for Nagoya subway logos and magazine covers for travel publications, revealing his connection to local infrastructure and print media. These works showed how the artist wove his creative practice into the city's everyday landscape.
