Sugimoto Art Museum, Art museum in Mihama, Japan.
The Sugimoto Art Museum was an art museum in Mihama, Japan, that displayed paintings and works by artist Kenkichi Sugimoto across a main building and a separate annex. The collection focused on Japanese painting and also included graphic work Sugimoto produced for outside clients.
The museum opened in 1987 through a partnership with the Meitetsu Group and became a cultural venue for the Mihama area. It closed in 2021 after more than three decades of activity.
The museum had a traditional Japanese tea room called Sugi-an where visitors could take part in tea ceremonies. This space sat alongside the displayed paintings, making it possible to move between viewing art and sitting down for a quiet tea in the same visit.
The museum stood close to Mihama Ryokuen Station on the Meitetsu Chita New Line, making it easy to reach by train. As the museum is now closed, it is worth checking current access conditions before visiting the area.
Kenkichi Sugimoto designed logos for the Nagoya subway and covers for travel magazines, showing how his work reached into everyday urban life. These commissions were displayed in the same building as his paintings, placing commercial design and fine art side by side.
