Uchida Houses

The Uchida Houses are traditional Japanese residential buildings with wooden structures and thatched roofs from around 1900. The museum displays living spaces and preserves documents and objects connected to the family's ship trading operations.

The houses were built in the early 1900s when the family was active in seafaring and trade transport. They document a period of local history connected to economic life in Mikawa Bay and beyond.

The site reflects the importance of ship trade that shaped the region for centuries. The preserved rooms show how trading families organized their daily lives alongside maritime activities.

The buildings feature special windows called Monomi that were positioned behind ship masts to monitor vessel conditions. This practical solution shows how maritime work was directly integrated into the home design.
