Matsumi Falls

Matsumi Falls is a waterfall near Towada in Aomori Prefecture that drops about 90 meters through a natural rock chute into the Oirase River below. The water creates a nearly vertical plunge as it falls through this narrow stone formation.

The site received official recognition in 1990 when Japan's Ministry of the Environment included it in the country's Top 100 Waterfalls list. This designation established it as a nationally recognized natural site worth protecting.

The waterfall draws visitors to the Towada-Hachimantai National Park throughout the year, serving as a gathering point where people come to witness seasonal transformations in nature. Locals and tourists alike use this spot to mark the passage of time through changing water flows and surrounding plant life.

The waterfall shows stronger water flow during spring when snow melts from the mountains, while autumn offers red and gold foliage along nearby hiking trails. The best time to visit depends on whether you prefer to see powerful water movement or vibrant colored leaves.
