Sakurai Kofun, Ancient burial mound in Minamisoma, Japan.
The Sakurai Kofun measures 74.5 meters in length and 6.8 meters in height, featuring a rectangular shape with an earthen step pyramid at its head section.
Dating from the mid-4th century CE, this burial ground formed part of a group of 37 tumuli built on a river terrace during the rise of Japanese clans.
The structure represents funeral practices of ancient Japanese society, with archaeological findings revealing traces of bamboo-shaped wooden sarcophagi at the rear portion.
The archaeological site stands within Sakurai Kofun Park, located ten minutes by car from Haranomachi Station on the JR East Joban Line in Fukushima Prefecture.
This national historic site contains a moat ranging from 7 to 20 meters wide surrounding the burial mound, marking the third largest kofun in the Tohoku region.
