Mt Karou, Mountain summit in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.
Mt Karou is a 429.3 meter high mountain on the northern edge of Fukushima Prefecture with views of the Pacific Ocean and the Zao mountain range. Two parallel hiking trails start from a wooden torii gate and climb through forested slopes to reach the summit.
The mountain got its name from the ancient presence of deer and wolves in the region, reflected in the Japanese characters of its name 鹿狼山. These animal names have remained part of the local heritage and the mountain's identity for generations.
Local residents gather at the summit every January 1st to watch the first sunrise of the new year, following Japanese tradition. The place serves as a gathering point where people connect with nature and local customs.
The hike takes about one hour on moderately sloped terrain through forest. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and prepare for changing weather conditions depending on the season.
A shrine sits at the peak, and nearby hot springs feature outdoor baths facing the ocean. This combination of mountain, shrine, and natural thermal waters creates a special place rarely found in the area.
