Kura no Kyōdokan Sairi Yashiki, House museum in Marumori, Japan.
The Kura no Kyōdokan Sairi Yashiki is a house museum in Marumori composed of seven storage buildings and two traditional residences that display items from different Japanese periods. The twelve registered cultural properties on the site are defined by six traditional structures and multiple storage buildings spread across the grounds.
The museum occupies the former residence of the Saito Risuke merchant family, who operated their business through seven generations from the late Edo period into the early Showa period. The buildings and collections reflect the economic and social changes that took place across this long trading history.
The buildings display traditional clothing, artwork, and household items that reveal how merchant families lived and organized their daily lives across generations. Walking through the rooms gives you a sense of the values and priorities of these communities.
The site is roughly an hour from central Sendai and works well for a half-day visit to explore all the buildings and displays. Wearing comfortable shoes is advisable, as you will be moving between several traditional structures spread across the property.
A cafe called Taisho Roman Kissa operates on the second floor, serving rotating monthly menus with local ingredients. From there, visitors look out through period-style windows onto the surrounding grounds.
