Former Kameoka Family Home, Important Cultural Property in Date City, Japan

The Former Kameoka Family Home is a wooden residential building in Fukushima Prefecture featuring a pale yellow exterior and an eight-sided tower room on the third floor. The house contains several specialized rooms with varying architectural details and interior finishes.

The Kameoka family built this residence in 1904 during the Meiji period, funding the project with profits from their silk manufacturing business in Koori Town. The building dates from a time of economic growth and regional modernization.

The interior shows a blend of Japanese building elements with tatami mat rooms spread across two floors and detailed woodwork using Japanese zelkova and Southeast Asian timber. The rooms display the family's wealth through their handcrafted quality.

The building sits seven minutes' walk from Oizumi Station on the Abukuma Express Line and is open daily except Tuesdays. Visitors should allow enough time to explore all the rooms and see the tower details.

The first floor contains two specialized rooms with enhanced decorative elements, including ornate ceiling and wall fixtures in the main living area. These rooms show an exceptional level of craftsmanship that reflects the family's standing.
